Enet Chasi, age 18Enet Chasi

Enet’s mother died in 2003 when she was 14. Her father died in 1999. Her relatives refused to look after her and her two younger brothers. The youngest boy is sick. She took care of the boys and herself. One day she heard from a friend that Pastor Sikiyani could help her with her school fees so she could go to school and write her O levels (O levels are public examinations written at the end of sophomore year in High School). She says the most courageous thing she ever did was to ask the Pastor to help her pay for school. He now helps with school fees and clothes for her and her brothers to wear.  She passed her O levels getting four A’s and two B’s. Eventually her grandmother saw what a good job she was doing taking care of her two younger brothers, so she said she would help Enet. Her uncle said that after she finished her O levels she had to go to work as a housemaid, but she still wanted to further her education. She now has a sponsor who is paying for her A level studies at boarding school. She can visit her younger brothers on weekends. Her younger brothers are being taken care of by a neighbor and her grandmother. Our caregiver, Eleanor Alfred, makes sure they are keeping well.
